The Yurt Story

The yurt is undeniably magical.
Every time I walk in, it feels like a present. At first, I thought this dream was out of reach, but then it actually came true!
For those unfamiliar with yurts, they can be surprisingly expensive. Despite my admiration for them, the cost was a barrier until a pivotal phone call from a friend. They were working at a remote fishing lodge on Vancouver Island and noticed the resort was selling off their used luxury yurts at cost. Was I still interested? Absolutely! I immediately called to secure one with a deposit. We had the yurt, but could we bring it to life?
The yurt itself is just part of the expense. We needed to construct a platform, set up electricity, install a bathroom, a wood stove, and countless other necessities. Then came another transformative call! A family member, intrigued by our project, offered financial support in exchange for participating in the yurt raising, valuing the experience over idle funds. Such incredible generosity has been integral to every phase of this journey.
The composting toilet was gifted, the wood stove was acquired from a neighbour's renovation, and we found the sink by the roadside. People arrived with tools and enthusiasm, asking for nothing in return. Whenever we faced a need, solutions seemed to appear as if by magic. While the process was challenging, a force seemed to propel the project forward.
People often inquire about the time it took to complete the yurt. To open my doors to the public? Roughly three months, but in truth, this has been a lifetime in the making. It is an up-cycled marvel, crafted with abundant community support and love. And the gifts continue to arrive. I often find interesting art material offerings propped on the doorstep of the studio Isn't this just the perfect place to gather and continue creating our own magic?
In this space I host my private art therapy practice, afterschool arts programs and community workshops. It is a space that felt so needed and is so loved by all the gather here. Hope you can join me one day.
